Description

Fused Bing Crystal
 Magnesium Oxide FM MgO
Fused Bing Crystal
What is Fused Bing Crystal Magnesium Oxide FM MgO?
Fused Big Crystal Magnesium Oxide (FM MgO), also known as Electro-Fused Magnesia or Fused Magnesia, is an ultra-high purity and density form of magnesium oxide. It is produced by melting high-purity magnesite or lightly calcined magnesia in an electric arc furnace at temperatures exceeding 2800°C. This extreme process results in the growth of large, well-developed periclase crystals, giving the product its name and exceptional physical and chemical properties. It represents the pinnacle of magnesia products for the most demanding high-temperature and high-performance applications.
Core Features of Fused Big Crystal Magnesium Oxide
· Exceptional Purity & High MgO Content: Achieves MgO levels typically ≥97%, with extremely low impurities (SiO₂, CaO, Fe₂O₃, Al₂O₃), ensuring superior performance and chemical inertness.
· Large Crystal Structure: Characterized by large, tightly bonded periclase crystals (often >1000µm), which provide outstanding thermal shock resistance, slag corrosion resistance, and high-temperature volume stability.
· Superior Density & Refractoriness: Possesses a very high bulk density (often >3.50 g/cm³) and an ultra-high melting point (~2852°C), making it an ideal raw material for premium refractory products.
· Excellent Electrical Insulation: High purity and dense structure grant it superior electrical resistivity at elevated temperatures, making it critical for heating element insulation.

Application
Fused Big Crystal MgO is the material of choice for extreme conditions and high-value applications due to its unmatched purity and stability.

Advanced Refractories: The primary application. Used as the core raw material for manufacturing high-performance magnesia-carbon bricks, magnesia-chrome bricks, and monolithic refractories used in steelmaking ladles, cement rotary kilns, and glass furnaces. Its large crystals resist penetration by molten slag and metal.
Electrical Heating Elements: Serves as the critical insulating and thermal conductive filler in mineral-insulated (MI) heating cables and tubular heating elements (e.g., in water heaters, industrial ovens). Its high electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity are essential.
High-Tech Ceramics: Used in the production of specialty ceramics for substrates, crucibles, and insulating parts that require extreme thermal and chemical stability.
Abrasives & Precision Polishing: High-purity fused magnesia powder is used as an effective yet gentle abrasive for precision polishing of semiconductor wafers and optical glass.

FAQ
What is the key difference between Fused Magnesia (FM) and Dead Burned Magnesia (DBM)?
The fundamental difference lies in the production process and resultant crystal structure. DBM is sintered at high temperatures (1500-2000°C), resulting in smaller crystals. Fused Magnesia is melted in an electric arc furnace (>2800°C), allowing for the growth of very large, direct-bonded crystals. This gives FM superior density, purity, thermal shock resistance, and slag corrosion resistance, making it suitable for more critical and demanding applications than standard DBM.
2. Why is crystal size so important in Fused Magnesia for refractories?
Large crystals are directly linked to performance. In refractory applications, larger periclase crystals have fewer crystal boundaries, which are the weak points where slag penetration and corrosion initiate. Therefore, big crystal fused magnesia significantly enhances the brick's resistance to chemical attack and mechanical erosion from molten steel and slag, leading to dramatically longer service life for furnace linings.
