Summary
Fused magnesia: essential refractory for steelmaking, enhancing EAF/ladle life with high purity & thermal stability.

Fused Magnesia: The Bedrock of Modern Steelmaking
Fused magnesia (FM), produced by melting calcined magnesia in electric arc furnaces at over 3000°C, is the most critical refractory raw material for modern steelmaking. Its ultra-high melting point (2800°C), large periclase crystals, and high density deliver superior corrosion and thermal shock resistance compared to conventional dead-burned magnesia.
FM serves as the core component of magnesia-carbon bricks for electric arc furnaces (EAFs), steel ladles, and basic oxygen converters. Optimized ladle linings using electrofused magnesia with large crystals have extended service life from 39 to over 46 ladles, significantly reducing refractory consumption per ton of steel.
The global fused magnesia market reached approximately US$ 930 million in 2025, with steelmaking accounting for about 60% of demand. As the steel industry shifts toward EAF-based green steel production, the need for high-performance FM continues to rise steadily.
Leading steel mills now rely on high-purity fused magnesia to ensure longer campaign life, lower maintenance costs, and improved operational safety. For critical applications like slag lines and impact zones, FM-based refractories remain the proven, indispensable solution.
In terms of mining equipment protection, high-activity magnesium oxide with purity above 95% is used to prepare high-temperature refractory coatings and linings, which are applied to mining equipment such as crushers, ball mills and smelting furnaces. Due to its excellent high-temperature resistance (melting point up to 2852℃) and wear resistance, it can effectively protect the inner wall of the equipment from high temperature, friction and corrosion, extend the service life of the equipment by 30% to 50%, and reduce the maintenance cost and downtime of the equipment, thus improving the overall production efficiency of the mining enterprise. In addition, it can also be used as a dust suppressant in mining operations. When mixed with water and sprayed on the surface of the mining area and transport road, it can form a stable protective film, reduce dust pollution, improve the working environment of the mining area, and comply with the environmental protection requirements of the mining industry.
