Year-End Shipping Schedule and Q1 2027 Planning

Summary

Year-end dates compress the shipping calendar. Plan production, booking and Q1 arrivals now.

Year-End Shipping Schedule and Q1 2027 Planning

The last two weeks of December look quiet on a production calendar and are anything but quiet in practice. Year-end inventory counts, holiday shutdowns at destination, bank closures, export customs deadlines and carrier schedule changes all land in the same fortnight - and immediately after it comes the Lunar New Year build-up, which falls in February 2027 and pulls January cargo forward. Buyers who plan Q1 arrivals now will ship on schedule. Buyers who wait until January will be competing for space and for production slots at the same time.

Dates That Compress the Calendar

Three effects overlap. Destination-side shutdowns in late December and early January slow discharge, yard movement and inland delivery, so a container that lands in the last week of the year may not be available at your plant until well into January. Banking closures affect letter of credit presentation, amendment and expiry dates, which quietly becomes a document problem rather than a logistics one. And the pre-holiday pull-forward - shippers moving cargo before the February holiday period - tightens vessel space from January onward. The practical rule is that anything you need in February should be on the water before the end of January.

Production and Packing Windows

Leave realistic time at the plant end. Standard fractions in the 0-1 mm, 0-3 mm and 0-4 mm ranges can often ship from running stock, but 200 mesh and 325 mesh powder need mill time, and fused campaigns are planned in discrete blocks with long cooling and sorting cycles. Packing and consolidation for palletised 25 kg or 50 kg bags and 1000 kg jumbo lots typically takes several days, and production planning, maintenance and year-end stocktaking all compete for the same window. If your grade requires a dedicated campaign, the order needs to be placed weeks earlier still.

Booking Ocean Space Before the Rush

Book against the container yard cut-off, not against the estimated departure date, and work backwards. Transit from Dalian varies widely by lane: roughly 10-18 days to Southeast Asian ports, 15-22 to South Asia, 20-28 to the Middle East, 30-40 to North Europe and the Mediterranean, 18-25 to the US West Coast, and 35-45 to the East Coast of South America. Add the inland haul from Dashiqiao, export clearance and a buffer for weather. Three to four weeks of booking lead is realistic in a quiet market; in the pre-holiday build-up, earlier is safer, and keeping a second carrier on file is worth the administrative effort.

Documentation and Customs Cut-Offs

Most delays in this period are documentary. Shipping instructions and verified gross mass have hard cut-offs, often 24 to 48 hours before loading, and a late VGM will roll a container regardless of how good the cargo is. Export declaration must be filed before the vessel sails. Certificate of origin, Form E and RCEP certificates take processing time and must be consistent with the commercial invoice. Letter of credit expiry and presentation periods need checking against the holiday calendar on both sides. Send document instructions with the order rather than with the shipment.

Building the Q1 Arrival Plan

Work backwards from the date material must be on your floor. If 500 tonnes of refractory-grade magnesia has to be in the plant by mid-February, subtract inland delivery, then transit, then booking, then packing and production - and you will find the order needs to be released in the first half of December, not in January. Cover the whole holiday period in one plan rather than treating December and February separately, because the February shutdown affects production at origin as much as demand at destination. Splitting the Q1 volume into two shipments reduces single-vessel risk at negligible extra cost, and holding one campaign's worth of the critical grade is cheap insurance.

Contingency: Weather, Congestion and Rollovers

Northern China in deep winter brings fog and ice risk around the Bohai ports, which can delay sailings by several days, and congestion or blank sailings can remove a week from a schedule without warning. Plan for it rather than absorbing it. Build a few days of schedule buffer into every Q1 shipment, agree a laycan window instead of a single date, confirm the rollover policy when you book, and identify an alternative loading port and an alternative carrier in advance. On the commercial side, agree in writing who carries demurrage and detention if a delay occurs - that clause is worth more than any freight discount you will negotiate this season.

HOLY Perspective

HOLY (CNMGO Group Limited) manufactures CCM, DBM and FM at Dashiqiao in Liaoning and ships FOB Dalian to more than 50 countries, with packing specified for moisture protection on long and humid routes. Our advice for the year-end transition is to release Q1 orders in December, confirm a laycan rather than a fixed date, and cover the February holiday period in a single plan. Send our team your grade, tonnage, packing format and target arrival month and we will map production, packing and vessel booking against current conditions.
