Planning 2027 Magnesium: Contract vs Spot

Every magnesium buyer faces the same question at budget time: how much of next year's volume should be committed under contract, and how much left to the spot market? The answer is not ideological - it depends on how substitutable each grade is, how much downtime a shortage would cause, and how confident you are about your own consumption forecast. What matters is making the split deliberately, by grade, rather than defaulting to whatever the last negotiation produced.

What Moves Magnesia Prices

Five variables drive the price of CCM, DBM and FM, and they move at different speeds. Ore and concentrate availability in Liaoning, together with mining and environmental permitting, sets the floor for the whole chain. Energy is next: sintering is fuel-intensive, and electric arc fusion for FM consumes several thousand kilowatt-hours per tonne, so power tariffs shift fused prices faster and further than sintered ones. Steel and cement demand sets refractory consumption, which is driven by lining campaign cycles rather than by production tonnage alone. Freight adds a volatile layer, particularly in the peak seasons. Finally, currency and payment terms can move an effective landed cost by a few percent without any change in the underlying material.

What a Contract Actually Buys You

A contract buys three things beyond a number. The first is allocation: when kiln or furnace capacity is tight, committed customers are scheduled first, and spot enquiries wait. The second is production planning, because a known annual volume lets the producer stage campaigns instead of reacting, which shortens effective lead time. The third is quality continuity - the same ore blend, the same kiln route and the same grading schedule, which is what actually stabilises refractory performance or dosing behaviour. Against those benefits, a fixed-price contract transfers commodity risk to the seller, who will price that risk into the number.

Where Spot Still Makes Sense

Spot is not simply the expensive fallback. It is the right tool for genuinely substitutable grades - a standard industrial CCM, for example, where several sources meet the specification and a shortfall would not stop a plant. It is also right for the exploratory part of the portfolio: qualifying an alternative source, testing a new grade, or covering an unexpected upside in demand. And there are windows, usually when freight has fallen and refractory demand is seasonally soft, when spot undercuts contract. The mistake is relying on spot for a grade you cannot substitute on short notice.

Building a Blended 2027 Strategy

A practical structure is to rank every grade you buy by two measures: how quickly you could qualify an alternative, and what a two-week shortfall would cost you. Critical, hard-to-substitute fractions - high-purity FM, a specific DBM sizing, a reactive CCM qualified into a dosing plant - belong mostly on contract, commonly 60-80 percent of the annual volume. Standard grades can sit at 40-60 percent contracted with the balance on spot or quarterly review. Then hold physical safety stock for the top-ranked grade; one campaign's worth of the critical fraction costs far less than an unplanned shutdown. Review the split quarterly rather than setting it once in December.

Contract Clauses That Matter

Price mechanism is the obvious one: fixed for the year, quarterly review, or index-linked to a stated cost input. Whatever you agree, write the adjustment formula down rather than agreeing to negotiate in good faith later. Then cover Incoterms and who books freight; quantity tolerance, normally plus or minus 5 to 10 percent; delivery as a laycan window rather than a single date; a specification attached as a schedule with rejection and allowance thresholds; third-party inspection at load port and who pays for it; force majeure that is defined rather than open-ended; payment terms and currency; and duration, notice period and termination. A one-page specification schedule prevents most disputes.

Volume, Tolerances and Call-Off Schedules

Annual volume means little without a call-off mechanism. Agree a rolling schedule - for example, a firm quantity for the coming quarter plus an indicative quantity for the two quarters after - and a minimum notice period for each release, typically 30 to 45 days for sintered grades and longer for fused campaigns. Set minimum and maximum shipment sizes so freight economics work on both sides, and decide whether the supplier holds consignment stock at your site or at the port. Shipment splitting deserves a mention too: two or three arrivals instead of one reduces single-vessel risk at almost no cost penalty.

HOLY Perspective

HOLY (CNMGO Group Limited) runs CCM, DBM and FM campaigns at Dashiqiao and ships from Dalian to more than 50 countries, and we plan kiln and furnace schedules against committed volume rather than against spot enquiries. Our advice for 2027 is to contract the fractions you cannot substitute, keep optionality where the design allows it, and put your grade schedule in front of your supplier early so it can be matched to a production campaign. Send us your annual tonnage by grade, packing format and target arrival months and our team will propose a contract and call-off structure.
