As Southeast Asia expands coal and biomass fired power and industrial boilers, magnesia-based flue gas desulfurization (FGD) is emerging as a preferred route for controlling sulfur dioxide emissions. Why MgO Beats Lime in FGD
Traditional lime scrubbing consumes large volumes of reagent and generates bulky calcium-sulfate sludge. Magnesium oxide reacts more completely and at a faster rate, producing a more concentrated, easier-to-handle byproduct (magnesium sulfite/sulfate) that can be oxidized and crystallized for sale or disposal. The result is lower reagent use per tonne of SO2 removed and a smaller waste stream.
The Role of Reactivity
FGD performance depends heavily on how fast the sorbent dissolves and neutralizes flue-gas acid. Light burned magnesia (CCM) with high reactivity - often measured by citric-acid activity - gives scrubber designers a smaller, more efficient absorber.
