HOLY 2026: A Year in Export Markets

As 2026 draws to a close, it is worth taking stock of what changed in the magnesia trade and how our customers responded. For HOLY (CNMGO Group Limited), the year was defined less by dramatic price movement than by a steady shift in what buyers ask for: tighter specification bands, better documentation, more predictable lead times, and suppliers who can answer a technical question rather than only quote a number. This review looks across our four product lines, the regions we served, the work done on quality systems and logistics, and what we expect to matter most in 2027.

Demand Across the Four Product Lines

Caustic calcined magnesite remained our highest-volume export line, driven by environmental and construction applications rather than by refractories. Flue gas desulfurization, wastewater neutralisation and magnesium cement board production accounted for most of the growth, and in each of those uses the deciding specification was reactivity and grind consistency rather than headline MgO percentage. Dead burned magnesia demand tracked steel and cement output in our main markets and was characterised by buyers consolidating their supplier lists toward producers who can hold bulk density and the calcium oxide to silica ratio within a narrow band.

Fused magnesia saw continued selective demand: buyers were more willing than in previous years to split an order, placing fused material only at the highest-corrosion positions and using well-specified dead burned magnesia elsewhere. Magnesium sulphate monohydrate was our fastest-growing agricultural line, with plantation and horticultural customers in Southeast Asia and Latin America moving from trial to repeat volume once they had a full season of yield data.

Regional Highlights

Our shipments continued to reach more than 50 countries. Refractory customers in India and the Middle East took the bulk of dead burned and fused magnesia, with enquiry quality noticeably higher than in previous years: more buyers sent slag chemistry and campaign targets instead of a grade number. Southeast Asian plantation and fertiliser customers drove kieserite and agricultural light burned magnesia volumes. European and North American customers focused on environmental and construction grades and on documentation, with several converting to jumbo-bag supply after evaluating their handling costs. Latin America and Africa remained smaller in volume but grew in enquiry count, which is usually the leading indicator.

Quality Systems and Documentation

The most requested improvement in 2026 was traceability. More customers asked for lot-specific Certificates of Analysis with the full oxide panel, loss on ignition, bulk density and sieve analysis per fraction, and more asked to retain reference samples for later verification. We responded by tightening our lot numbering and making the COA a standard part of every shipment rather than an optional document. Our ISO-certified quality system underpins this, and third-party inspection at loading remained available for customers who want independent confirmation before the container is sealed.

Logistics Through Dalian

Export operations ran through Dalian, which continues to offer the best combination of sailing frequency and inland cost for material produced at Dashiqiao in Liaoning. The main logistics lesson of 2026 was that booking discipline matters more than ever: customers who booked production slots and vessel space early avoided the rate spikes and equipment shortages that affected the peak seasons. Packaging also drew more attention, with more buyers specifying moisture-barrier liners, container liners and desiccant for humid routes after experiencing caking in previous years.

Technical Support and Product Development

Our technical team spent much of the year on application work rather than on selling: matching reactivity bands to board producers, recommending grain fraction sets for refractory converters, sizing kieserite rates against leaf and soil analysis for plantation customers, and troubleshooting slurry preparation for desulfurization plants. That work changed our product offering in small but useful ways, particularly in the granular size ranges we now stock for mechanical spreading and in the grind consistency we hold on slurry grades.

Lessons Learned and Priorities for 2027

Three lessons stand out. First, customers reward consistency more than they reward a marginally better number on a single certificate, so process stability will stay our priority. Second, the total delivered cost of magnesium oxide is dominated by handling, reactivity loss and downtime rather than by the price per tonne, so we will keep investing in packaging and technical support. Third, the buyers who plan furthest ahead consistently get the best outcomes, and we intend to make forward planning easier by sharing production and shipping calendars earlier. For 2027 our priorities are tighter specification bands on CCM reactivity, expanded granular capacity, and faster turnaround on sample and documentation requests.
